How to write recruiting emails so good engineers bookmark them for 4 years

This was an email I sent to a candidate in 2021. His feedback at the time was:

Kudos for a cold recruiting email that is actually informative and gives a good sense of the mission and culture.

He bookmarked the email and then reached back out 3 years later when he was actively looking, saying “You'd impressed me with a recruiting email a few years ago, and I made a note to contact you when I was ready to move”.

That is validation that this is a very good email. Read on is the email in full (with some identifying info removed).

My checklist to write an email this good

  • One line founder origin story
  • Most notable investors
  • One line company description
  • 2x examples of traction (use real numbers)
  • What will they do and using what tools?
  • Write the hook for the subject (this is the hardest thing to get right so do it last once you’ve gathered all the other context)

Here is the email in full

Subject: Roger, what do you think of this Engineering Manager role? ($XXXM Series B)

Hi Roger, I'm keen to discuss an Engineering Manager role with COMPANY if you're open to it - they would love your early stage startup experience and technical leadership experience at STARTUP.

This is a hands-on manager role: alongside working on their Event-Sourced Ruby codebase, you'd lead up to 7 direct reports. If you find joy in mentoring and coaching other engineers, this is a great setting for you. They are huge advocates of pair programming, which has created a respectful and collaborative environment.

COMPANY is the marketplace for startup equity - it allows staff at pre IPO startups to sell their shares (and buy a house, pay off their student loans or launch a startup of their own). It means startups can stay private for longer, and can hire engineers who otherwise might be tempted by the liquid stock of Amazon or Facebook.

Founded in 20XX by YC Alumni, the platform has traded over $X of shares to date, raising a total of $X Series B funding in the process. Having tripled their engineering team last year, they are seeking a Technical Lead who is enthused about taking the step to Engineering Manager.

Their stack is Ruby on Rails + React, they use GraphQL for their API's, Postgres as their database, with everything deployed on Heroku and AWS.

If working with a bright, ego free peergroup who value Domain Driven Design is appealing then let me know!

I'd love to discuss further so let me know when you are free to chat or book a convenient time here:
